JUST IN: FG to monitor social media – Minister

On Tuesday, the Federal Government said it was working on how to inject sanity into social media that it said was out of control at the moment.

In a press conference in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this clear.

Mohammed said no responsible government could sit back and allow unchecked continuation of such activities that could set the country on fire.

“It has reached a level that the government may just no longer fold its arms and allow this to continue,” he stated.

The minister also said that no amount of attacks or criticism would stop the government from implementing tougher sanctions for broadcasting stations that violate the broadcast code of the nation, particularly as it concerns the dissemination of fake news as well as inciting and divisive comments that President Muhammadu Buhari recently approved.

He assured stakeholders that there was nothing to fear from responsible journalists as the government’s intention was not to gag media.

He said the government’s goal was to restore sanity to the airwave of the country.

Datails shortly.
